I thought that I was looking for a softer pillow and so I believed I needed a down feather pillow but really I needed a low profile pillow so that my neck was not jacked up off the mattress at such a degree (more than I realised) leading to all that neck pain!
For me, that was a key distinction, not just the type of pillow (soft or hard) but the pillow HEIGHT in relation to my anatomy when lying down my mattress. I had shopped around but if the store had a bed to lie on it wasn’t mine, and the pillows were new and still in their packaging so I couldn’t really compare them to what my body needed to be properly aligned.
I also appreciated your tips about how to position myself with my pillow when lying down. Even though I thought I was straight and not straining my neck to one side, I was, which also contributed to waking up with a tight (cramped) neck.
