Myotherapy feels like performance enhancing drugs without the pills and needles!
"Before I explain the benefits I got from my myotherapy treatments with Lena Yammine at Inner Outer Health, there are a few things you need to know.
First, this is not a paid testimonial. I’m offering this to her and you, as my gift for the revelations and benefits I’ve obtained. I feel compelled to share them for all the reasons you will read about below.
I apologise if this is a long testimonial, but if you are an elite, high performance, competitive or professional athlete, you will appreciate the many distinctions I include and you can determine for yourself if you think they apply to you and your preferred sport(s).
If you aren’t a competitive athlete, but you care about your health and wellbeing, you will still appreciate the many clarifications I provide. Too many people use “throwaway” phrases as testimonials. This is an in-depth detailed description to reveal why and how the benefits were obtained from a layperson’s perspective.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did preparing it for you. You might want to know it took me four hours to write the first draft and another two to edit and refine it, to include references to other sports.
I’m a 50+ year-old elite, high-performance squash player and coach. I reached a “top 10 World Masters Ranking” picking up the sport at age 35. You can click here for the full list of my squash career accomplishments. I play and coach +/-10 hours of squash per week which takes its toll on any body, let alone a “mature one…!”
What you really need to know is that as an elite athlete, I care about my body and my performance. My key goal is to push myself as hard as I can physically – WITHOUT getting injured, which if you are competitive, you know how hard it is to get to that line and not cross it in the heat of the moment, in the middle of a close match or training session.
My relevant treatment history is that I’ve had hundreds of relaxation and remedial massages to treat my sore muscles, release tension and preventatively repair “damage” and assist in recovery. I’ve also had dozens of hours of physiotherapy the minute I had niggles of strain or discomfort. This preventive approach is important because it’s rare. You need to know my preventive bias upfront.
Most athletes wait for an injury to occur before they consider physiotherapy or myotherapy
As a Masters squash player and coach, my number one concern is injury prevention for the level of high performance I want to play at. As a part-time coach, I’m on court about 10 hours per week in, week out. That’s a lot of demand I’m making on my body. If I don’t protect and manage my body, it will start to break down and I risk creating chronic injuries, which is what I want to avoid at all costs. I want to be able to play and coach into my seventies, albeit at a reduced pace and intensity!
So, when does the testimonial start? Right now…
I had my first myotherapy session where Lena treated my upper body because she structurally and functionally assessed my whole body and determined that was where “the lowest hanging fruits were”, to improve my physical structure to enhance my performance.
As a right-handed squash player, I use my right arm disproportionately more than my left, which understandably is a common problem with many racket-based sports.
My back and right shoulder muscles were tight, so Lena worked on my abdominals and obliques (muscles on the side of my waist) --- WTF?!?!
What? I told her - my back muscles are tight not my abs! That was the first of many distinctions that make a myotherapeutic approach different to physiotherapy and remedial massage.
Myotherapy seeks to determine the SOURCE of the problem (tight abdominal muscles and hip flexor - psoas) and to deal with that instead of the SYMPTOMS (tight back muscles).
The repercussion of my one-sided tightness in my back was the pinching of a nerve at L4-L5 vertebrae in my spine that caused referred nerve pain in my right quad (upper leg muscle). It felt like the tingling like when your leg falls asleep when it’s been in a bent position a little too long.
Referred pain is well known and understood with traditional treatments (physiotherapy, osteopathy and remedial massage) – but those approaches focus on releasing the back – rather than the source – the abdominals, diaphragm and hip flexors - psoas. FYI, I had at least a year of back treatments that never “solved” the problem…
Can you see yourself having the same issues? The treatments help, but they don’t… solve the real problem… The cause!
We all need to breathe, but for an elite athlete, breathing is “everything”
Lena’s treatment gave me the ability to breather “deeper”, using more of my diaphragm instead of the shallow chest breathing we all find ourselves doing. Breathing for a squash player provides the necessary oxygen to sustain quick bursts of rapid movement involved within long 10 to 40+ shot rallies. More oxygen also assists in quicker recovery between points, games and matches. This is particularly important for a “Master’s athlete” who wants to defy the ravages of ageing! Younger players will still find themselves “fresher sooner” so they can train harder and more frequently.
Another aspect of Lena’s approach is separating the fascia tension (deep connective tissue) from the superficial and deep(er) muscle tension. Without providing treatment advice, I know from my sessions that releasing the fascia has made a HUGE difference to my comfort and performance – increasing my flexibility and reducing the tension I feel in extreme movements – at the “skin” level of my muscles rather than just the deep(er) levels within the muscles.
In layperson terms, I feel stronger now that I’m more flexible. If you play one or more racket sports, you’ll know what that means. When you reach for a shot that’s just at the outer edge of your reach, the additional flexibility helps you to “get there” without feeling like you’re going to “pull a muscle”.
Now, I can get to a lot more of those “shots” that used to be winners and stay in the rally/game
Squash is a very fast-paced sport, requiring quick decision-making and a wide variety of explosive movements. These include lateral (side-to-side) and rotational (turning around on-the-spot), as well as change-of-direction movement, having to turn your body from a forehand to backhand position or vice versa.
At the top level of the game, milliseconds count, so quick reflexes are a key attribute. That’s where the mind-body connection comes in and where myotherapy supersedes what I call “traditional treatments”.
Myotherapy reprograms your brain’s synaptic connections to provide new pathways of possibility by “releasing” the structural and physical constraints (incrementally) within your own current physical capabilities and athletic abilities and skill level.
Simply put, your brain will start to consider new options and choices previously unavailable to you. In my case, it means I immediately felt the court was “smaller”, that I could get to shots that were previously just a bit “too far away”… Shots that previously were considered “winners”, now they’re shots I can get to (defensively), but at least the rally doesn’t end!
In addition to improved movement – my decision-making is quicker and CLEARER. I’m able to see what’s happening and reacting with MORE, BETTER shot selections. It’s hard to explain why this would be the case, but it’s DRAMATICALLY different. Having too many options in most sports is inefficient since the brain has to process more information, taking up valuable time. Time that should be used to pick the BEST option amongst FEWER choices.
I have to admit this was a totally unforeseen benefit. This alone “is worth the cost of the treatment on its own” at my level of performance.
I’m not advocating you will have this or any of the benefits I’ve had, I’m just giving you an honest description of how myotherapy has benefitted me. I share it with you, because there are so few such detailed revelations and I wish I had known about “this” years ago…
With the reduced mental clutter, I’m able to see “more” on court. That means the game has slowed down and I can focus on what my opponent is doing and selecting my shot selections much more effectively. It’s as though I’m “smarter” on court, the ball seems twice as big and the rush/panic of a high-paced game is no longer as stressful as it used to be. I honestly never thought this would happen!
Squash requires a lot of watching – the ball and your opponent who is constantly moving around – side-to-side and front-to-back. With Lena’s treatment of my neck, I can now rotate it to “watch the ball/my opponent” more comfortably. Standing on the T (in the middle of the court) and turning my head towards the back is always a “stretch”, but now, I can do it without the extreme pulling of my neck and shoulder muscles. Without necessarily having more range, I can rotate my neck with less effort, which means I know I’m “watching more closely” without straining my neck.
Another improvement is not getting ahead of the shot (moving my head where I expect the ball to go) and waiting… The reason I used to move my head was the resistance I felt in my neck, not being able to rotate it fast enough, so I would “cheat” by starting to move it a fraction of a second before my opponent hit the ball… often, too early. Now, I don’t have to do that which means I get less caught out when my opponent “holds” his shot to try to deceive me. At my level, a capable opponent can pick up on this and vary his stroke/hitting pattern to throw me off.
That is not all I got from my first myotherapy session!
I also got more range in my shoulder, my hitting arm. Even though it’s only about 3 to 4 centimetres of my racket preparation, that extra range allows me to produce 10 to 15% more pace with less effort than before. I suspect this has since increased to +/-25% as my mind-body connection has fully integrated.
Integration is when the mind-body connection, the synaptic brain connections are fully synchronised with the muscular contractions and extensions in your body – what is commonly known as muscle memory. The “memory” begins in the brain, not in the muscles. An expert myotherapist like Lena can identify the chasms that exist within your structural and functional framework and bridge those gaps strategically and tactically.
Prior to my myotherapy treatment with Lena, I was structurally out-of-balance at my hips. Lena released tension is a variety of muscles groups so I “straightened up” and stopped favouring one side. This happens quite often and is the cause of many issues when the body overcompensates. After my myotherapy treatments, I felt grounded, balanced and more “centered”.
With my newfound balance, I felt like I had “gecko feet” – like the lizards that can climb walls and hang upside down on ceilings. For the first time, I felt all my toes supporting my feet and giving my arch additional “spring” in my step.
I had no idea my feet and ankles were sub-optimal. I didn’t have any pain or discomfort in my feet or legs – but my body had twisted ever so slightly to accommodate a lack of balance and in so doing, my toes were “curling” instead of spreading out to give me additional contact with the floor (or inner soles of my shoes).
This only became apparent when I walked around in my shoes – I almost felt like I was walking barefoot – while wearing shoes!
Reality check: I have to admit at this stage how strange all of this must sound to you, but trust me, it’s even stranger when it happens to you!
So that was my FIRST myotherapy session – it was a double session with a full assessment. Lena did this for me as a special “extended” session. She now offers a full body/structural assessment. It takes two hours as a first session, for her to determine what can be done and where the easiest, quickest improvements will come from, for you specifically. I highly recommend you make this investment in time (and cost).
My first myotherapy session focused on my upper body, whereas the second involved primarily my legs and feet.
Squash is all about court movement. Once you have a certain level of racket skills, success lies in quickness, speed and agility, which is something that (usually) decreases with age. I say usually because even at 50+ years of age, I’m actually getting quicker and more agile as a result of my myotherapy treatments.
Lena released my feet, manipulating them as you would if you kneaded dough and wringed a towel to remove excess water. It felt incredible and sounded like when you build something out of Legos and then push down to lock them into place and you hear them all ‘click’ into place.
I could sense my foot joints clicking and crunching as I heard them “pop” into place – it was painless and within two or three minutes, I could arch my foot like never before… What an incredible feeling it was! It’s hard to explain. The metaphor that comes to mind is a diving springboard at a pool – the ability to bend to release power – explosively – with very little effort.
It felt like having spings in my feet!
I have disproportionately large/strong quads which creates tension in my hamstrings and knees. With the release provided by Lena’s treatment, I’m now able to play with less of an imbalance within my muscles providing smoother movement, especially lunges and other explosive movements. Older squash players are notorious for patella ‘tightness’.
Stamina has not been a problem for me – I have what are called slow twitch muscles – but since having my myotherapy sessions, I have more power in my legs for a lot longer and I pull up afterwards less tired and sore.
In addition to my much-improved performance, my recovery is faster even though I’m playing with higher intensity, confident that I’m well within my new, increased physical capabilities that are producing better results/outcomes.
If I had to quantify the benefits of my first two sessions of myotherapy, I would conservatively say they are:
Athletes take steroids and other performance enhancing drugs and supplements with severe side effects. With my myotherapy sessions, I feel like I am turbo-charged with a “new and improved” body – that feels “10 years younger”.
Of course none of this is a promise you’ll get the same or equivalent benefits, but what if you did?
If someone asked me what my first two sessions are worth to me as a high performance athlete, I would say they were priceless, but if I had to put a price tag on the value, I would say, without a doubt that I would pay $1,000-$1,500.
Now, with a treatment plan, I know I will reinforce these improvements over the next series of treatments, as additional incremental improvements become possible with the enhancement of my mind-body connection and consolidation and integration provide additional benefits.
Please note that many of these improvements are well beyond the scope of a layperson’s experience and that it takes a substantial level of self-awareness to be able to differentiate the nuances I have covered.
If you are not an elite athlete, I still recommend you consider myotherapy because of the wholeness you will gain within your “inner self” that will enhance and improve your inner world – the world that you tap into when you meditate and go within “yourself” when contemplating life and its many challenges.
Floatation therapy accelerates and improves the integration of the mind-body connection created with myotherapy
If a holistic approach is important to you, then I also recommend you complement your myotherapy treatments with floatation therapy.
I suggest a 2 for 1 ratio, two hours of floatation following one hour of myotherapy. I have found that to be optimal.
To answer your obvious question – yes, my myotherapy treatments were “integrated” with floatation. I see them as directly linked and mutually beneficial. Another bias I have is a sense of urgency – I want to get the best results as quickly as possible, with the least amount of effort and lowest cost. But without injury! Floatation does all of that PLUS it’s relaxing and an incredible experience on its own!
So there you have it, a detailed first-person account of the combined benefits of myotherapy and floatation. I hope you make the investment in yourself and seek Lena’s expert advice to improve your sports performance or if you just want to be a bit more functional with your body to enjoy playing with your kids or whatever else brings you joy, happiness and contentment.
If you’re tried chiropractic treatments, physiotherapy or remedial massage and still have pain or discomfort, give myotherapy a try and see what happens. You might just be totally amazed, as I was!"

- 25-30% quicker reflexes and better decision-making.
- A 25% decrease in my recovery time and discomfort.
- A 10-15% increase in strength under extreme conditions (reaching and lunging for shots that used to be winners, out of my range that I can now get to).
- A 10% improvement in my overall game results, which is HUGE and disproportionate to any other “legal” non-drug sources of improvement.

As a Masters athlete, with a few physical issues, Lena quickly diagnosed my main problem and got to work on it immediately. Knowing
I had a State Championship event on the following two days, she was very particular with her treatment to ensure I would be able to compete. Just finished day one of competition feeling much better than I have in a long time and managed to produce four PB's on the day.
Looking forward to seeing how much better I can get following more treatment. Thanks Lena!

Lower back pain - slipped disc / disk bulge
"After suffering a slipped disc in my lower back I was in so much pain, but I found that from my very first session with myotherapy I had relief. I have to admit I was a bit shocked. I've never had this type of therapy before but walking out feeling lighter and refreshed is fantastic. Fixing not only my back issues but my neck as well is such a bonus. This is now my go to therapy. It works so well."

"When I first went to Inner Outer Health I was unsure as to what benefits I would get. I hoped the treatments would help my lower back pain and headaches, but what I didn’t expect was through the thorough consultations I not only got relief in my lower back and head but I also started to experience relief from my debilitating asthma which has plagued me for the last two years. I am able to reduce my medication immediately after myotherapy treatment, and have been able to reduce my overall medication on an ongoing basis. I cannot express in words how wonderful the individual care, professionalism, follow up and passion for what they do means. They stand out from other health care practitioners I have been too."

"I went to Inner Outer Health after suffering lower back pain for a number of months. I had gotten to the point where even turning in bed caused me pain. I had started to suffer from having a broken sleep every night. After only one session, I felt an enormous difference in my pain and stiffness levels. I have had four treatments to date, and on Lena’s recommendation, also started seeing an osteopath. I now sleep through the night, and have had only occasional moments of back pain, which are much reduced in intensity and duration. I will continue to have ongoing treatment, as required, to prevent ever going back to the way I was before I started."

"Had the most wonderful experience visiting Inner Outer Health. The floatation tank is a truly relaxing must and a great way to de-stress. Myotherapy was amazing and helped me understand why I'm suffering lower back pain; so much so I'm definitely going back this week. Lena and staff are true professionals. Taking great care of you from start to finish. You will not be disappointed. Grateful thanks."

"This was my first visit to Inner Outer Health. For the past few years, I have been suffering from lower back pain. Visited many massage outlets, but they offered temporary relief. Doctors prescribed drugs but did not diagnose the source of the problem. Lena from Inner Outer Health was the first person to identify to a greater degree the reason for my pain on my lower back thru her 16 year experience in the industry. She immediately started on the Myotherapy session. This was my first session. It was a great session. I will need many more sessions to get relief from my back pain."

Aches and pains
"I found my first visit at Inner Outer Health to be very positive indeed. From the moment I walk in I sensed a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere. I felt that Lena really listened to me and I felt very safe and confident in her hands. I felt amazing when I left after my myotherapy session - no aches or pains.
Very much looking forward to my next session!"

"Myotherapy is my ‘miracle cure!!’ At 25 years of age and suffering from chronic back, shoulder, feet and knee pain for years, I had tried chiropractic treatment, physiotherapy, remedial massage, osteopathy and acupuncture. I found these treatments to provide only short-term relief, so I kept searching for something, which would enable me to be pain free. Further research led me to discover Myotherapy. I was amazed by the prospect of a treatment, which could increase blood flow, restore mobility and assist in the prevention of muscular injuries and pain. Somewhat sceptical, and thinking it must be ‘too good to be true’ I decided to contact inner outer health for an initial consultation. Lena Yammine takes a considerable interest in every one of her clients and has impressed me beyond belief from day one with her knowledge of the body and the role every muscle, tendon, ligament and bone plays. After three months of treatment with Lena, Myotherapy has changed my life for the better, and provided me with a real solution to achieve a better quality of life – a pain free life!!

neck pain
"I have for many years suffered from neck and back pain and frequent headaches.
After much frustration and trying many different treatments, I have found regular Myotherapy to be the best way to manage what had become a chronic problem.
Since commencing treatment, I have had a significant reduction in the frequency and severity of my headaches as well as an overall improvement in the way my neck and back feels on a day-to-day basis."
"I first sought treatment from Lena Yammine of inner outer health because of chronic pain in my left hip. This had deteriorated to the point where I could only walk for 20 to 30 meters before needing to rest for 5 to 10 minutes until the level of pain subsided enough for me to continue.
On my fist visit, Lena did a careful assessment, and diagnosed Bursitis. The treatment consisted primarily of targeted intensive massage, together with specific stretching exercises that I did between treatments.
I got some relief after the first treatment, and my symptoms improved, and ultimately completely disappeared over a course of five weekly treatments.
I now visit inner outer health for a maintenance treatment once a month. I have no hesitation in recommending Myotherapy, and in particular, Lena Yammine at inner outer health."

"I accumulate a lot of tension in my upper back, neck and shoulders due to a demanding and stressful work schedule. I have been seeing Lena at Inner Outer Health since 2007 for regular therapeutic massage. As well as releasing the tightness in my muscles, I find myotherapy treatments a wonderful way to manage stress. As well as massage, Lena has provided expert guidance on exercises and stretches I can do between visits to minimise ongoing problems. I highly recommend Lena for her skill in diagnosing and treating the culprit muscles and tissues causing discomfort. Lena is a personable professional who really knows what she is doing! I recommend Inner Outer Health and Lena to anyone suffering from pain."

"I have a history of neck problems from working on computers. Recently I slept with my neck exposed to the cold, resulting in a flare up of my old neck injury. I was unable to move my neck or head without severe pain and tablets did not help. The pain continued on for a week, at which point I sought help from Lena. She worked on my shoulders, neck and back, providing immediate relief and the following morning I was able to get out of bed with ease. After one, more follow up visit and attending to the exercises Lena provided, I was mobile and free of pain again. I find Lena caring, skillful and thorough. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her services to anyone suffering from acute or chronic pain."

posture
"Friendly staff. I felt welcome right from the minute I walked in the door.
To notice a difference in my posture from the very last session was amazing – my back pain was lessened, so I am eager to see what other benefits arise from my future sessions. Have tried so many things to help with my back pain to no avail, it was amazing to notice the difference after one session."

JOINT STIFFNESS AND FATIGUE
"I was highly recommended to Lena Yammine through a work colleague. This has turned out to be one of the best recommendations I have ever received.
After many years of constant muscle and joint stiffness and fatigue and consultations with varied tactile therapists I have finally found relief.
After my first consultation, the results were quite amazing. All stiffness and fatigue has virtually disappeared and now I am able to focus on my posture and enjoy my daily activities with great pleasure.
I continue my sessions with Lena purely as a preventative; her professionalism and attention to detail are quite outstanding. Thank you Lena."

TEMPEROMANDIBULAR DYSFUNCTION (TMJ)
"In 2006, I developed a temperomandibular dysfunction (TMJ) and have been treated by numerous health care providers since that time with very little effect. Several months ago, I was recommended to Lena. The treatment she initiated allows me to now open my mouth to 35mm, compared to 25 mm when treatment was commenced. I have had a reduction in the number of headaches and am enjoying the benefits of being able to move my jaw freely (for example, eating apples).
Thank you Lena! I am thrilled with the results."

"I tend to develop quite a lot tension and soreness in the upper right hand corner of my jaw due to a stressful job and the tenacity to clench my jaw during stressful situations and whilst I sleep. It has resulted in severe ear aches, headaches, the inability to chew certain foods and constant pain throughout the day. Whilst tablets have been able to subside the pain for a few hours, I have found that the only way to gain pain relief and to eliminate the ear aches, is Myotherapy. Right from session one, Lena is able to identify and help eliminate the pain which provides me with Instant relief and continues to improve up to two days after treatment. I have found that three sessions is what I need to feel myself again. Lena has taught me various techniques to keep the pain at bay if it wishes to return in small doses (which thankfully has become less frequent).
I cannot speak more highly of Lena, she is very skillful, professional and caring – I continue to recommend both her and Myotherapy in general to everyone!"

fibromyalgia
"Myotherapy has enabled me to achieve both pain and stress relief. Lena has taught me how to banish and manage the pain I was experiencing in the back, shoulders and neck. Her treatment involves a developing knowledge of the client alongside her skilled deep tissue treatment. Recently I was given the official diagnosis of fybromyalgia and I have experienced immediate and ongoing relief of all pain associated with the neck, shoulders, back arms, wrist and hands. My GP is very happy with how myotherapy has worked and is encouraging the treatment. I enjoy Lena’s friendly and intuitive interview before appointments begin and sometimes I actually fall asleep during the myotherapy treatment. After a treatment, I feel wonderful and I am pain free and a lot less tense. I feel very fortunate to have discovered the benefits of the myotherapy, both physical and psychological. I would recommend it to anyone for pain management as well as deep relaxation.

arthritis
“With arthritic like hands that were beginning to curl and tender feet that barely supported my body first thing in the morning, the new injury to my arm brought more frustration than actual pain. At 50 plus, I still wanted to keep my part time cleaning job for several more years but the likelihood seemed more remote as each year passed.
Exercising at the gym had been reduced to low impact classes only and I’d given up on my daily walks a year ago. My handicraft work had ceased to exist and my latest found interest in the family tree looked like ending also as my arm injury kept flaring up after using the computer key board. Fortunately for me, when the light at the end of the tunnel was beginning to fade, my girlfriend mentioned her success with her back after several visits to a Myotherapist.
A quick search of the internet brought me to Inner Outer Health where Lena, a Myotherapist began to sort my problems out.
Lena worked on my injured arm and extended the work down to my hands, giving me some exercises to do at home using both my hands and arms. The pain and inflammation slowly subsided and by the third visit I was able to knit more than two or three rows at a time, something I had not achieved for a long time.
On my fourth visit I decided to see what could be gained by having my feet attended to and was pleasantly surprised to find that a tender spot under my right foot, that no amount of cushioning could relieve, had totally disappeared.
I’m now going to keep up a maintenance program with my therapy so I can continue to do the things I enjoy.
I’m going to start my walks again an up my gym program and continue with my handcrafts. How easy it is to forget that it was an arm injury that brought me here and the benefits I gained to my hands and feet was just a bonus."

"Thanks Lena for getting my muscles and body functioning the they should. I was in a pretty bad way and I am now almost back to normal – nothing a few
more sessions will not achieve!

"I found out about myotherapy in Sydney and when I moved down to Melbourne, I wanted to find a myotherapist in my local area. That is how I came across inner outer health. From the initial consultation Lena made me feel comfortable and was very thorough in her examination, she seemed to know what she was doing and that prompted me to come back. I had weekly treatments as I had constant headaches due to tightness in my neck and shoulders. Once the pain had reduced I only needed treatment once, a fortnight and I now attend the clinic once a month for maintenance. Lena also gave me home exercises to do to improve my flexibility and gave me suggestions on what pillow to use to help my neck during sleeping.
There are few practitioners, who really care about helping their patients to be pain free and not just to make money and I found that at inner outer health."

"When I 'chicken winged' my shoulder a friend suggested I see Lena, her Myotherapist. Until then I knew nothing of Myotherapy. Four sessions later I'm an advocate, thrilled that so many aches and pains have been resolved and my general posture and flexibility so improved. Now I'm telling my friends about Myotherapy and especially about Lena."
Many thanks!"
